99designs Cafe launched in Jakarta and Surabaya, Indonesia in June and boy, are we excited!
In case you were wondering, 99designs Cafe is a series of monthly, 1-week events held at coffee shops in different cities around Indonesia. The purpose of this project is to provide a space where Indonesian designers can meet up, work on projects, share ideas and learn more about design.
In addition to that, it provides ample opportunities for new designers to learn their way around the 99designs platform.
At the start of June, we (99designs staffers Sasha and Caroline) flew over to Indonesia and helped launch the series in Jakarta and Surabaya. We had a great experience meeting and interacting with awesome designers in the 99designs community, and want to give huge thank you to everyone who took part – locals and, especially, those who made the trip all the way from outside of these two cities!
So, let’s take a look at our photos and video from Jakarta and Surabaya!
Our very first 99designs Cafe was held at Tanamera Coffee, an artisanal coffee roaster located in the heart of the city. Even though the event officially started at 6pm, designers started flocking to the shop as early as 5pm. We love everyone’s enthusiasm!
We were humbled by the professional design speakers – Arif PSA, Hastjarjo Wibowo and Hagung Sihag (all active members of Indonesia’s national graphic design association FDGI and faculty members of local university Binus’ School of Design) – who came to share their insightful knowledge and experience. We thank them as well as everyone else who helped make this night a success: Alfiyan and Djuniawan for photos and documentation; the attendants; our brand ambassador Stevanus; and last but not least, the staff at Tanamera Coffee who ensured the event ran smoothly. We couldn’t have done it without you!
After Jakarta we headed to Surabaya, where we launched 99designs Cafe at Folks! Coffee and Tea House. Founded in 2012, Folks! is a really easygoing and laid-back cafe situated downtown.
Their staff ensured the launch ran smoothly, and we couldn’t be thankful enough! Over 40 people came that night to hear our speakers, –arwino– and Debrina Tedja of Waft-Lab, share their design know-how.
A big thanks to the speakers, especially –arwino–, who doubled as our brand ambassador for the event; our hard-working volunteers, Nuruddin Araniri, Agung Sutrisno, Ahmad Makki and Juang Mahmud; and of course, to each and every one who came to make it a memorable event!
We recently ran a contest for the 99designs Cafe logo, and awarded a stellar design by Fattah Setiawan and Bramanto Setyaki that incorporates traditional Indonesian motifs (you can read an interview with the two designers here). In one of the highlights of the event, Fattah and Bramanto showed up to create a chalk drawing of the design right on the spot. Sheer artistry – check out the amazing time lapse in the video at the end of this post!

We sure had a great time, and can’t wait to get everyone together again for 99designs Cafe in the following months! Stay tuned to find out more about July’s 99designs Cafe in Jakarta!
