"A fashionista, bride-to-be, and young academic embarks on a quest to improve her life and self-image by avoiding mirrors for a year." I'm a sociologist, a feminist, and a fashionista. I write a blog, Mirror, Mirror OFF the Wall, which chronicles a year I spent avoiding mirrors. I am writing an intelligent and funny memoir (under contract with a REAL publishing house), about my year without mirrors. I am smart, fashionable, and quirky - and so is my book! :)
What's your vision?
Help me design a bestselling book cover for: Mirror, Mirror OFF the Wall: How I Learned to Love My Body by Not Looking at it for a Year. **My story was recently featured on ABC's 20/20, and I have been promised an interview on Good Morning America when my book comes out in May 2013!!!** I need a cover design for my memoir about the year I spent avoiding mirrors. The cover needs to be SMART, PLAYFUL, and FEMININE (though not crazy-pink-and-purple-sparkles-girlie, just clearly for a mainstream female audience). I'm looking for a "big" book cover, not something that would live on an e-book or niche market product. I am not happy with the covers my publisher has come up with, and I think YOU can do better! No constraints on color. The book cover will be 6 X 9. My publishing team is considering THREE different cover concepts. I want to see designs for all three. 1) Concept 1 is represented in the attached images of Eve Ensler's The Good Body and Kate Wicker's Weightless. Both of these covers highlight a central symbol/image, and combine illustration/graphics with photography. Obviously, a mirror or hand mirror is the symbol we have in mind, but if you think of anything else... go for it! The tricky part, of course, is that I was AVOIDING mirrors during the project, so if you can think of a way to playfully communicate an anti-mirror mirror, that would be best. 2) Concept 2 is based on the cover of Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project. Here is my vision: the "blue sky" from this cover becomes a mirror, and the city-scape at the bottom becomes a woman's vanity, full of cosmetics, jewelry, hair stuff, etc. The vanity items should include: makeup, an engagement ring (maybe in a ring box or on a jewelry holder), and a pair of cat-eye glasses. Again, I like that this cover combines illustration with photography. 3) Concept 3 is the least thought-out, but may end up being the simplest: the shape of a mirror's ABSENCE on a wall, with the text "Mirror Mirror Off the Wall" inside of the shape, with subtitle below. How to pull this off? Not sure, but there's got to be some way to suggest that a mirror USED to be on a wall, but isn't any more... BOOK DESCRIPTION: A fashionista, bride-to-be, and young academic embarks on a quest to improve her life and self-image by avoiding mirrors for a year... When Kjerstin Gruys became engaged to the love of her life, she was on cloud nine—until it came time to shop for a wedding dress. Having overcome an eating disorder years before, Kjerstin found herself struggling to maintain a positive self-image as her pending nuptials imposed a new set of impossible beauty standards. Gruys decided to embark on a bold plan for boosting her self-esteem while celebrating love and life. A memoir of discovery, Mirror, Mirror off the Wall charts Gruys’ awakening as she vows to give up mirrors and other reflective surfaces, relying instead on her friends and her fiancé to help her gauge both her appearance and her values. The result? A renewed focus on what truly matters, regardless of smeared makeup, crooked eyebrows, or imperfectly styled hair. In the honest, witty, self-aware voice that has made her blog wildly popular, Gruys explores what it means to be a feminist in a society that creates destructive ideals of beauty and sex appeal. Having worked in the fashion industry before becoming a sociologist, Gruys draws on her frontline expertise to explore the gender inequities created by society’s obsession with images of the physically “flawless” female. Putting a human face on the topic with humor and poignant scenes from Gruys’ life, Mirror, Mirror off the Wall sparks important conversations about body image and reclaiming the power to redefine beauty. AUTHOR BIO: KJERSTIN GRUYS has served as a market researcher and merchant in the fashion industry and is now a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at UCLA. Her research focuses on the relationship between gender inequality and beauty standards. She is also a longtime volunteer at About-Face, a San Francisco nonprofit that helps women resist media messages that harm self-esteem.
