What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
Cover Design project for "The Gospel App" (subtitle: Life Applications for Stressed People. Goal: Design a cover for a new very-relevant training/discipleship manual. It is designed to help stressed out, confused, weary, underachieving Christians who have long been dissatisfied with their Christian experience. For real people in the real world with real problems. This is not as much lessons in theology; rather the Gospel App focuses on how can I apply the gospel’s principles to my real life now, for real life things that happened yesterday, the day before, etc. High application. The Gospel App is for individuals and groups. Target: 1) Dissatisfied, underachieving millennial Christians (20-35) who struggle with their faith, addictions, bad relationships and identity 2) New Christians (all ages) 3) other dissatisfied believers (including church damaged) The Gospel App (subtitle: life applications for stressed people). I want to have some fun with the modern popularity of smart phone apps. Perhaps one day this will become an app as well. But the idea is that we are applying the singular gospel to real life issues, dysfunctions and problems. How do I apply the gospel to what I did, or what happened to me yesterday, or a week ago? Here is what I am playing with for the back cover copy. It will give a good idea of the heart of the curriculum. Are you disappointed with your Christian experience? It hasn’t lived up to your original expectations when you “signed up”? Are you waiting for your spiritual life to just take off? Are you shackled by addictions and other poor habitual behaviors? Do you wonder if God still loves you? Or wonder if you messed up, crossed that unforgivable line somewhere back? Are you troubled that you are not seeing people come to Christ? Is your prayer life listless--at best? Hit or miss? Are your relationships below par? Are you afraid what God really thinks of you? Do you have trouble forgiving old wounds, much less new ones? Does your Christianity come in fits and starts? Do you wonder what happened to your joy? The Gospel App is a nine-week participative curriculum designed to remind underachieving Christians--and that’s most of us, of course--how to both receive and apply four core aspects of the singular Gospel to our real lives over and over again. It isn’t rocket science, not really. A child could do it. Core principles? All we need is need, and most of the time we don’t even have that! We have not because we ask not! If we can learn to receive and apply the Gospel to our daily lives, struggles, relationships and triggers, there will be a very noticeable change in our behavior and motivations. Key: instead of trying to help Christians to become more like Christ, the curriculum hopes to recondition Christians to become more dependent upon Christ (which of course should lead to more other-directed right behavior). "All we need is need." Key elements of each lesson? Learn how stress, guilt, shame, orphan behavior (stark self-sufficiency) and idols negatively drive my behavior 24-7. But each of these has an opposing power: 1) "(sin)" (meaning that Jesus died for my sins and so I can access a power in opposition to my ongoing guilt, 2) “right”- Jesus' rightness is imputed to me, meaning that God irreversibly loves me now as much as the Father loves the Son--a power in opposition to my internal shame, 3) “adoption”-I am adopted as a child of honor --a power opposing my self-sufficiency, and lastly, 4) Holy Spirit-I can by faith access the Holy Spirit, power in opposition to my running to other sources for my identity and well being. The more that I condition myself to access the four powers, the four truths of the gospel, the less self-centered I will behave, and the more that I can finally really be myself. I would like a cover that artistically plays with the notion of "app". I do not want it too “religious.” Remember, the target audiences are generally weary or suspicious of organized religion. I have attached the "shape" that we are using throughout the 9-weeks. It is a sad stick figure who is struggling on their daily journey. Each week, the participants will use that same shape with only slight alterations, to process how to apply the gospel to their addictions, conflicts, shame, guilt, relationships, their Christian life (worship, prayer, evangelism), how to forgive deep hurts, how to actually repent, and mean it. The curriculum is edgy, smart, geared to Millennials. It will use social media (You Tube, TV movies, QR codes for mini-teachings, etc.) Key words? guilt, shame, stress, trauma, orphan, idol versus (sin), right, adopt and Holy Spirit, under the curve behavior, over the curve behavior, other- versus self-focus. I have also attached the cover image that I have been using up until now. I do not want to in anyway hinder the creative process---Do not feel bound to that image.
Remember that the target audience is young, smart, independent and very weary of organized religion. They have real life questions about real life issues (how do I get rid of shame and guilt, how to forgive, how to deal with conflict and addictions, interested in topics of sex and sexuality). The Gospel App is designed with them in mind. I am not looking for "churchy." I have included the cover that I have been using for the last couple of months. I am not in anyway trying to hinder the creative process. Go for it.
