Melissa R. Michelson (Ph.D. Yale University) is Professor of Political Science at Menlo College. She is co-author of Mobilizing Inclusion: Redefining Citizenship through Get-Out-the-Vote Campaigns (Yale, 2012), which won the 2013 American Political Science Association’s Ralph Bunche award and the 2013 best book award from the American Political Science Association’s Race, Ethnicity and Politics section, Living the Dream: New Immigration Policies and the Lives of Undocumented Latino Youth (Paradigm, 2014), A Matter of Discretion: The Politics of Catholic Priests in the United States and Ireland (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017), and Listen, We Need to Talk: How to Change Attitudes about LGBT Rights (Oxford, 2017). She has published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, including pieces in American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, and International Migration Review. Her current research projects explore voter registration and mobilization in minority communities and persuasive communication on LGBT rights. Brian F. Harrison (Ph.D. Northwestern University) is Lecturer at the University of Minnesota and Founder & President of Voters For Equality, a political organization dedicated to LGBTQ education and research and political engagement among progressives and LGBTQ allies. Previously, he held academic positions at Yale University, New York University, Wesleyan University, and Northwestern University. He is author of A Change is Gonna Come: How to have Effective Political Conversations in a Divided America (Oxford University Press, 2020) and co-author of Listen, We Need to Talk: How to Change Attitudes about LGBT Rights (Oxford University Press, 2017) and has been published academic journals including Political Behavior, Legislative Studies Quarterly, PS: Political Science & Politics, Social Science Quarterly, and Politics, Groups, and Identities.
People are uncomfortable with transgender people for a variety of reasons. To shift attitudes towards transgender people, there first needs to be a comprehensive look at what is driving those attitudes and the complicated emotions that a transgender identity might evoke. Then, strategic communication needs to acknowledge and diffuse opposition rather than dismiss or ignore it. Our experiments meet people where they are and explore ways to lessen affective or defensive responses. Effective reduction of bias against transgender people means finding ways to work with their discomfort—either through mediated contact, simple acknowledgement of discomfort, appeals to moral elevation, or humor—to allow them to get past those initial, gut reactions and instead embrace respect for transgender people and support for transgender rights.
The intended market for this book is social science students and scholars, particularly undergraduate and graduate students who are studying experimental design and/or social movements. In addition, the book will be of interest to community organizations, advocates, and policy makers interested in how best to move public opinion on transgender issues. It will also be of value to introductory political science courses, courses on experimental design, courses that focus on sexuality and public policy, and courses that look at social movements, sociology, identity, and political communication. The book also contains key elements of political psychology and will be of interest to those teaching about practical applications of important psychological theory. In sum, the market for this book is broad: it will contribute to those studying experiments as a methodological tool, to those teaching courses on practical application of social experiments, social movements, gender and sexuality, and civil rights, and to those actively working in the political and non-profit sphere for attitude or policy change.

What to avoid
We are looking to avoid the typical covers: something with transgender flag or a transgender symbol. The use of the colors of the transgender flag would be ok though. We would like to avoid images or ideas that reinforce gender stereotypes. We would like to avoid stock imagery.
