NEEDED: A NEW COVER FOR AN OLD, BUT STILL GOOD, BOOK
The previous title is: The Mom Walk - Keeping in Step with God's Heart for Motherhood. It was originally published in 2007 by a mainline Christian publisher, and then self-published after reversion in 2012 with the same title and a new interior and cover by Whole Heart. The previous 2012 version was 5.5" x 8.5" trim, 208 pages. That cover is now dated and cliche (mom with two young children walking) and desperately needing a makeover. Since that edition, my wife's blog and podcast have exploded and are reaching a large audience of young, contemporary moms. The 2012 print run is almost out, and we want to move to POD on CreateSpace.
THE NEW EDITION IN NEED OF A NEW COVER
The new 2016 version has been re-titled: Your Mom Walk with God - Staying Faithful on the Path of Motherhood (Sally Clarkson). The interior has been redesigned with better typography, and is now a 6" x 9" trim at about 230 pages. In order to revive this older book, the cover will be critical to catching the eye and imagination of GenX and GenY (Millennial) Christian moms. The target audience is modern but conservative moms with children in the 4-14 window.
I am wanting a cover that is contemporary and modern, but not abstract or fragmented. I am open to any designs that are warm, feminine, personal, and/or evocative. I can envision an artistic photo of some kind integrated into this cover. However, if there is a woman or children in the photo, it should not be a full-on face, but rather a shadows and suggestions kind of photo. Clothing should be modest (no low necklines or cleavage). Also, unless it is very subtle and artistic, the cover should avoid any Christian cliches and conventions such as a Bible, a cross, or a church. The cover should be evocative and interesting, even imaginative. Something that will make a young mom want to pick it up. Since the content is organized around an acrostic of the word PATH, the interior of the book features a small piece of clipart used on chapter headers of a path leading into the horizon. The idea of a path can be a strong image for the cover, too, but only if it can be expressed in a way that is not cliche (the previous cover failed with that concept). I'm a big believer in creativity and imagination, so take some chances.
We know the importance of the right cover for a book. Based on our experience with other covers for our books, I think this one could be a challenge to get right. We've always used individual designers before, and this is the first time I've crowdsourced a cover design, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect. My hope is that more options will lead to that special cover. If you are that designer, I look forward to working with you to give new life to this old, but still good, book. Thank you for your creativity and skills.
