Here is a brief synopsis of the book--Raw Coping Power: From Stress to Thriving explores new ways to address the growing problem of stress in society and the workplace. Its central premise is that each individual, social group, or workplace has an innate capacity to transform stress into an opportunity for thriving and flourishing. Stress is both a friend and teacher. We only need to tap into this truth through reminders, a certain vision, and practice of simple tools. And Raw Coping Power provides all of these with specific encouragement to use over 30 different exercises in the tool section of the book. The introduction presents many stories that show us how the history of humanity, in all of its intricate details and in all of our personal journeys, reveals a tale of resilience. It also discusses the benefits of the book, including how the principles, lenses, and tools help us tap into and cultivate our capacity to transform stress. The chapter on the 7 Principles establishes a foundation of knowledge—with different maps and terms borrowed from research. Each principle is discussed in depth with examples that give the reader confidence that our mind-body system is designed to transform stress instead of succumb to stress. For example, we learn the differences between coping, resilience, thriving, and flourishing and how we can begin to train ourselves to move through these levels. While the principles give us a working knowledge, the 10 Lenses are intended to create a new vision or way of seeing stress. This next chapter translates research from 10 different areas of modern science including neuroplasticity, post-traumatic growth, resilience, social capital, and the author’s own studies on team wellness in the workplace. The Tool chapter gives readers simple exercises, most of which can be completed in 10 minutes and each designed to help tap into our innate capacity for resilience and thriving. The purpose and background of each tool is described and specific steps are given that make these easy to use. A Resource section also gives many different tips on where and how to get additional help. Finally, much of Raw Coping Power is based in scientific research and a Notes section gives additional citations and capsule clarifications for studies and other references used.
