We are producing a book on the cultural history of Asaba; which is the capital of the Delta state in South-east Nigeria.
The book was written by an academic professor who recently passed away, aged 90, peacefully in his bed at home in Nigeria. His name was John Enenmoh. We are producing this book in memory of him and his work.
Near term we would like to produce a small edition featuring sample chapters for his funeral in Nigeria Friday 7th Feb 2014. Longer term, we intend to produce the full book with a re-designed inserts, so an opportunity for further design work.
The book is to do with the origins, cultural, social, tribal and anthropological history of the Asaba region, sharing insights and observations which cover many centuries going back to the city's formation circa 20 generations ago.
We would like book to have a classical feel in homage to John's academic background. The look and feel should take inspiration from 19th century hardbacks, serialisation work of authors like Dickens and encyclopaedias. More recent works that resonate with the design would be the irreverent book covers of Ben Schott, especially his Miscellany's.
we would be interested in seeing a historical map of africa (or Nigeria) that highlights the Delta region and perhaps is 'ghosted' in the background of a centrepiece of the front cover but in a subtle way.
Colours, we want to see something in Green, with a white or gold leaf effect for fonts / page 'furniture'. the green should not be too bright, we are thinking of something like a bottle green that is perhaps faded a little. other colours to consider, cream (again faded for heritage / vintage look) and brown/beige.
Fonts; again after something heritage, classical but not excessively italic-y...
