The App Icon is the first and last thing the user sees when they interact with the app - and more importantly the thing they'll see to draw them in from the App Store listings. We need an icon that has that special dynamic to it, instead of just a flat image with rounded corners.
The app itself shows a "screensaver" slideshow of the user's album art on the screen, flipping one of the covers around every few seconds. It is similar to the album art screensaver present on OS X but with much more interactivity.
I've attached screenshots of the app show its main functionality, and a couple icon drafts which we don't like too much. The first one with all the covers is too flat - it doesn't convey that message we're looking for. The second one with the single cover is better but too dark, it doesn't stand out.
- We don't really want any text in the icons. Let the image speak for itself.
- We like the border, but it isn't strictly necessary. Do whatever works for your design.
We'll need these icons in ai/eps/svg format. One file 512x512 for the iTunes store, another 72x72 for the device.
We also need to make sure that copyright issues aren't a problem, so keep that in mind if you plan on using actual album art in your design.
EDIT: I've attached a demo which shows the main functionality of the app. The slideshow goes automatically one cover at a time, or the user can touch covers to flip them manually. If you shake the device, all of the covers flip at once (seen at the end.) Hope this gives a better idea of what the app does.
