Andy H. got their new illustration or graphics by running a design contest:
Chidrens Books Black and White Line Illustrations
Check out Andy H.'s Illustration or graphics contest…
We publish children's educational materials with a special emphasis and love for working with children who are learning to read.
What's your vision?
We are updating the images in a children's beginning reading program. Many of the original illustrations are out-dated (hair, clothing, illustration style, etc.) We are looking for new black and white line illustrations to replace the original art. The entire project consists of approximately 250 unique illustrations. We are hoping to find 6-8 illustrators to complete this project. Our in-house art team will colorize the black and white line art you create for our soon to be released iPad edition of the program. We will provide the retained illustrators with pdf versions of the stories which contain the original artwork we want to replace. These are intended to provide ideas and overall direction for the new illustrations but artists will be encouraged to put their own creative concepts and styles into their illustrations. See the uploaded files for samples of the work done to date. We are happy to work with illustrators who prefer pen and ink vs digital work. For the purposes of the contest we'll need you to scan and submit your pen and ink in digital form. Should you be selected as a winner we may ask that you mail us your original illustrations so that we may scan them to our specifications. In the files section you will see several examples of work done to date. Contest Entry Guidelines For the contest please choose any 1 image from the Brown Hill Fair file to re-illustrate as a black and white line drawing. Your illustration should fit the story and use only linework without any gradients. Clean linework is important to our production process. Reviewing the samples we uploaded for ideas about what we are looking for in terms of linework is a good idea. In terms of style we are very open so long as they are appropriate for children and capture the concept/meaning portrayed in the original illustration you have chosen.
Updated 6/12/14 - We'll be choosing finalists tomorrow 6/13 at 10AM Mountain Standard Time. Please keep in mind that once the contest is over we want to contact several artists to help with this project. Thanks everyone for your hard work so far and the brilliant submissions. We are very excited about this project!End of update 6/12/14 We want to be sure that all participants in the contest understand these points: The contest we are running is a talent search. Even though you many not win the contest we are seeking 6-10 illustrators to complete the project. We will work with you on a one-to-one basis at the end of the contest. We sincerely hope that all the artists entering the contest are willing to undertake additional work for the budget outlined below. We will negotiate exact per illustration rates with the winners as we begin work following the contest. Our per illustration budget for the needed black and white line illustrations is $20-$30 per illustration depending on the size and complexity. This project is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and the budget is fairly fixed. Remember your contest submission should be based on any one of the three images from the Brown Hill Fair file.
Every design category has flexible pricing for all budgets. Illustration or graphics starts at $499.
