sci.comm got their new illustration or graphics by running a design contest:
Creative Scientific Illustration for Nature Methods Journal Cover, Neuroscience
Check out sci.comm's Illustration or graphics contest…
We're a neuroscience research institute, part of the Max Planck Society, one of the world's most successful research organizations. Our audience includes scientists, as well as potential students/supporters.
What's your vision?
- We are seeking cover art submissions highlighting a new technique developed by our scientists to “tag” specific brain regions. - This new method utilizes light to manipulate specific molecules in the brain allowing them to be tagged (i.e. glow/fluoresce). - The method is called “iTANGO”. The “Tango” part comes from the way the light makes molecules interact with each other, like a dance. - The authors have come up with a few ideas for inspiration which are attached and would like to bring attention to the dancers (in addition to a few other important and necessary components described below). In example 1, there are a few components integrated into the idea - The tango dancers, representing the molecules interacting with each other - The light being shown directly onto two dopamine molecules (molecular mechanism of this technique) as well as the dancers - Neurons in the background - Incorporation of musical notes as a nod to the tango/dancing In example 2, there is a little different representation of a similar idea - Tango dancers on a dance floor of neuronal connections - Light being directly shown onto the dancers In example 3, there are neurons that are directly under spotlights that are ‘tagged’ (i.e. glowing/fluorescent) and others that are not ‘tagged’ (or dark) which are outside of the spotlight. - While it is not shown here, if an idea like this is used, a silhouette of tango dancers maybe in between the rows of neurons would be necessary to show the method “Tango” idea. We encourage artists to be creative with the examples, just keep in mind the important elements of each concept, as the scientists selecting the winning illustration will be looking for something that incorporates the key items in one of the example ideas. Because we are not sure if the editors of the magazine would prefer a cover with or without the new technique name “iTANGO” we will ask the winning artist to provide two versions, one with the name ‘iTANGO’ somewhere in the illustration and one without. You may submit just one version for now, but we wanted to let all illustrators know that we would need a version with and without the name to submit to the journal from the winning artist in case it alters how you go about creating the illustration.
Please feel free to ask any clarifications or questions about the brief.
