To understand better the characters of the tale here below you can read the story.
Once upon a time there was a castle where lived a girl, so beautiful that had no equal on earth, but she had an arrogant heart. Every suitor that came close to her was rejected in a sneering way, no matter how rich and noble he was.
One day at the palace arrived a young man that the girl really liked. She liked him beyond belief, even if her arrogant heart didn't want to admit it. She let him cover her with gifts, one more precious than the other, but whenever he begged her to become his wife she always answered no.
One night the two of them were sitting close to a source in the woods, the water springing from deep in the thick stone, and the girl told the boy:
,,I know you will never be able to offer me a princely throne as my dowry, but if you replace the bush of thorns that hides this source with a fountain made of gemstones as pure as crystal, and as clear as the water that springs in it, I will become your wife."
The mother of the young man was a fairy and, when her son told her what the girl of the castle wanted from him, she did what she could and overnight created a blue, yellow and red pool that shined more than the brightest flowers in the world.
The day after the girl told the boy:
,,You did something, but it's not all I wanted from you yet. The fountain needs a garden and you will have to create it where the wood is, or I won't be able to be your bride!"
Once again the boy talked to his mother and that night, when the girl sat on the edge of the fountain, she saw blossoming bushes of violets and shades of roses all around her and in the blink of an eye the wood turned into the most beautiful and lush garden ever. The ground was covered with millions of flowers and birds were flying and tweeting in the trees: it was a joy!
The girl's heart swelled with happiness and when her beloved boy appeared in the garden she was tempted to wrap her arms around his neck and become his wife. But suddenly her gaze focused on the castle: compared with the wonderful garden with the shiny crystal fountain it looked old and dull.
So here is what she said:
,,I do like the garden, but it is not enough. I would like more from you: instead of the old castle you will have to build a new one made of pearls and rubies, or I won't be able to be your bride!"
The boy went to his mother, but the fairy bristled and in the blink of an eye she made the garden disappear, so once again the place was covered with a labyrinth of wild bushes and dry twigs. Only the shiny fountain remained and, from that day forward, the girl went to sit there every night with her broken heart to wait for her beloved boy, but she never saw him again.
And if she didn't die is because she is still there waiting and hoping.
