I teach 4 types of classes/instruction below:
Equine Based Farm Learning Program. This program is a medium to long-term opportunity for the trainee to learn and develop the skills to become a beginning and proficient teamster. The participant pays our farm for the training, use of horses and equipment, mentoring, and supervision on a month-to-month basis. You will work closely with the trainer(s) to insure a safe and productive experience. If selected, you would have the opportunity to work with our horses, on our farm in a wide variety of tasks under closely supervised to independent situations. You will spend a lot of time working along side Walt (one of the trainers), in observing, instructed, sharing, and independent learning situations with a variety of horses and equipment. You would learn all the basics of draft horse farming including how to harness, drive, and hitch. You would regularly drive a single horse or team and occasionally larger hitches. As you advanced, you would learn to do all the different tasks that we do with horses, for example, plowing, harrowing, discing, mowing, etc. You would also participate in the training of horses when available. In select cases we will take you and your horses both for the training opportunity.
The workshops are designed to maximize the practical aspects of working with the equine partner. During the two day workshops, you will do a lot of hands on work such as harnessing, driving, and handling of the horses; the experience is a great foundation to the use of draft horses and will give you a solid basic beginning and safe introduction to the craft. Once you have mastered these workshop basics, continued practice and learning will build your confidence, skills, and ultimately help you become an accomplished teamster. The advanced workshops, for those who have already learned the basics, are quite specific and intensive to certain situations; an example of this would be mowing hay with a sickle mower, plowing, or multiple hitch driving.
We offer individual custom training workshops for individuals or families. These sessions can be focused on specific issues of interest to the group and can involve the trainee’s horses. Examples of these are behavior issues or problems in your horses, specific learning issues, (plowing, driving, etc.), or other subjects of interest. These custom sessions can occur at your location or ours.
We offer horse training at our farm. Our farm is set up so we can take in your horses and provide beginning to intermediate training in driving, hitching, and implement use, both alone, as a team, or hitched with our more experienced horses. You can bring your current horse(s) that you are using, or your newly purchased horse(s) for our training. Our methods to start and train a horse takes at least a month of daily training, so it is a big time commitment; specific issues my require less time to work thru. An important part of the horse training is you--we will teach you methods and principles to ensure continued success and growth with your horses in a safe, positive, and productive environment.
