Ian McCabe is a Master Colorist at Nival Salon and Spa in Chevy Chase, MD. Starting in May 2010, Ian has been building a robust client base, particularly for his expertise in balayage, a distinctive French technique where a colorist hand-paints highlights. Ians work has earned him the opportunities to work with some of the top stylists and colorists in the industry, including Nancy Braun, Jo Blackwell Preston, Ted Gibson, Jack Howard and Michael McCane. After working from age 16 at a salon, Ian enrolled in the Aveda Academy in 2005. Eleven months later, Ian graduated and launched his career at Lluminaire Salon in Baltimore, Maryland and in 2010 moved his career to Washington, D.C. Ian was interested in coloring since childhood, but he always felt he wanted more out of his highlights. His answer laid in balayage. Since 2007, he has used this as his primary technique for highlighting; however, he still foils when appropriate. Ian has no preference over hair color or type, but instead loves all hues, whether its buttery blonde or deep scarlet red. His experience has led him to work with multiple color lines, including Loreal, Clairol, Redken and many others. Ian is a true believer in continuing to improve his coloring skills. His love for color is shown through his dedication to teach for Loreal from August 2007 through February 2011. During this time, Ian traveled throughout the East Coast to share his technique with fellow colorists. In his spare time, Ian spends time with his family just outside of Washington, D.C. His passion for hair is with him every minute of the day, and as Ian says, "you wear your hair every day, make sure you love it!"

Balayage is a hair coloring technique which is designed to create very natural-looking highlights which grow out without developing a noticeable and obvious root. Many stars and models use balayage on their hair, and in response to popular demand, many salons offer balayage, especially in urban areas. Some pride themselves on their balayage technique, considering themselves artisans of the craft and offering training to people who are interested in learning balayage. This coloring technique emerged in Paris in the 1970s; the word “balayage” is French for “to sweep,” a reference to the way in which the color is applied. After crossing the pond to the United States, balayage became extremely popular in the late 1990s. In the United States, you may see balayage spelled “balliage.” When hair is colored with the balayage process, the highlights are painted on by hand in a sweeping motion which moves from the base to the tip of the hair. At the base, the color is applied very lightly, while at the tip, the color is very heavy. The result is a chunky highlight which looks naturally sunbleached, and as the hair grows out, the root will be concealed for the first few months by the thinner color applied to the base of the hair.
