How CarbonCycle2.0 started their logo design journey

Carbon Cycle 2.0
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
Carbon Cycle 2.0 is an initiative at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory that seeks to energize and organize our scientists and employees working towards a common goal of a low-carbon energy future, while engaging with the public about the importance of our research.

Our current Carbon Cycle 2.0 mark is included in this brief, along with the main Berkeley Lab logo and a snapshot of a recent iteration of our forthcoming re-designed website. The new Carbon Cycle 2.0 mark will go where the placeholder "MobileMe cloud" logo currently is on the new site. We would like for the new mark to match the "web 2.0" aesthetic: think curves/rounded corners and the use of light and shadow for 3D and/or glossy effect. Our new mark will frequently be used alongside the main Berkeley Lab mark in powerpoint presentations and marketing materials, so it's included in the design brief for your reference. We like the Skype, Pando, and Campfire logo styles.
Our current website is here: http://carboncycle2.lbl.gov/. Note that we are moving away from the hand-drawn look and the green & orange color scheme.
The "2.0" in our name is intended to suggest a "new version" of the carbon cycle in which humanity does not emit copious amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. The natural carbon cycle involves cycling of carbon (usually in the form of carbon dioxide, CO2) between the atmosphere, ocean, and biosphere. See this explanation on our current website for more on the science: http://carboncycle2.lbl.gov/what_is_cc.html. You may be able to incorporate some science or recycling imagery or motifs in the new design.
Our slogan is "Pioneering science for sustainable energy solutions" but the new mark should work with or without the slogan.
