Hard Game UI redesign (Space Revenge)

Space Battle Mobile Game
Flat design using Material colors. It's a space game so the background will be mostly black. Attachments will give an example
I need to put this at the top: ------------------------------------------------ There's more at the bottom, but let me just open that yes our game has a hex grid. Now if we wanted a transparent or green or blue grid.. It wouldn't take a contest to change the color. We are really looking for a way to visually show there's some structure (grid) without just simply putting a bunch of hexes on the screen. Maybe that means using dots or connecting lines or partial hexes. I don't really know. We are looking for a great UI guy/gal who gets this. Yes the home tile where the ship sits probably should be a hex, but what about all the other tiles? How do you show that Ship A is going to Tile B a few places over. (We have already tried and played with coloring those tiles..) I'm trying to get something beyond that... We have proof of concept for most of this already, but it needs a redesign. Absolutely most important is how we represent the underlying hex grid. What we have now is too ugly and bold. It should be there, but more subtle. I don't really have good guidance on how to improve the grid. I've uploaded some rough inspiration and that's about as good as I can find. 1) We need a main screen - This will be 90% of the work. Especially how to represent all the elements we need like the hex battle grid. 2) Maximized chat 3) Battle mode We need those in both vertical and horizontal modes. So this is kinda like 6 screens. I'm attaching a sketch and background if it's of much help, but it may not be. PS... Black background and white text is not material design. Ok.... they will allow an off white, but let me tell you it's not easy to read. Yes it looks cool, but for the chat area please don't use it. PSS.. I know if you read this far you're really serious about this design competition. Please let me explain what I mean by the grid. Yes it's hex based tiles, but that doesn't mean just make the lines semi-transparent and think to go mess with other stuff. We need a way to have multiple ships on the screen. Possible to show which tile is active, which tile a ship is going to.. lines maybe?? dots.. There's a lot of ways to express there's a grid without clutter or lines everywhere. We are looking for innovation and somebody who actually *UNDERSTANDS* USER INTERFACES and usability. This is labeled a hard contest with a good payout exactly for this reason. Changing from red to purple is cool, but that is not a winning design by itself.
