Astanenbaum got their new other business or advertising by running a design contest:
Large poster for computer trade show wanted

This is a request for a large (A0) poster for a computer trade show
What's your vision?
We have rented a stand at a trade show to sell an embedded operating system called MINIX 3 to companies that make a product that contains a computer inside of it. Typical examples are telephones, TV sets, routers, ADSL modems, printers, appliances, digital video recorders and thousands more, but also industrial equipment. We need an A0 (84x111 cm) poster to hang on the wall of our stand to describe our system. There will be about 20,000 attendees of all ages from 60 countries. Most are engineers or engineering managers with lots of technical knowl¬edge. They are interested in specific information and cannot be fooled by fluff, but we want to be noticed. When choosing fonts and sizes, remember that people will be reading the poster as they walk by at a distance of 2-3 meters. Our slogan is: MINIX 3: A reliable, open-source, embedded operating system Our raccoon logo should be prominently displayed on the poster. See attachment. The following text, or something close to it, should be displayed prominently MINIX 3 is the third generation of a modular, flexible, microkernel-based operating system. It is ideally suited for an embedded system running on a 32-bit CPU with a memory management unit. Potential applications include those where modularity, flexibility, security, and high reliability are important. With nearly all the operating system running as isolated and protected user-mode processes, the chances of bugs or attacks causing problems are reduced and in many cases recovery from problems is possible automatically and without a reboot. Major product features include the following. They should be listed as bullets: • High reliablility (Some failed components can be replaced automatically on the fly) • Microkernel design (most of the OS runs as completely isolated user-mode processes) • For ARM and x86 (ARM version is for Beagle Board, but we can do ports for you) • Full TCP/IP stack (allows your devide to connect to the Internet, if needed) • Complete source code available (allows you to do further development if desired) • GPL-free license (you are not obligated to publish any changes you make) • No up-front or per-unit royalties (open-source software) We have a free CD-ROM with the software on it for people to take home and try. The poster should mention this. The software itself is described at www.minix3.org. Please examine this site carefully and put the URL on the poster. If your poster includes clip art, keep these things in mind. First, the final version must be 84 x 111 cm at 300 dpi, so if you want a piece of art to be 10 cm, the original needs to be 1200 pixels wide. Second, please don’t do anything illegal. You can use public-domain clipart or art for which you have purchased the rights.
Remember that this is for a poster to be printed at 84 x 111 cm at 300 dpi, so it needs to be high resolution and readable from 3 meters.
