Alternativehealth needed a new other design and created a contest on 99designs.
A winner was selected from 20 designs submitted by 9 freelance designers.
Cancer Defeated
This project is for a book cover. We have published ebooks on alternative cancer treatments since 2006. 65,000 people have purchased books and reports from us and we currently publish or market 15 titles. Our fans are loyal and purchase multiple reports from us. They also receive a free weekly e-letter from us called "Cancer Defeated".
About half our buyers choose to download their book as a pdf; the other half choose to receive a hard copy.
All of our marketing is online, mostly to committed fans of alternative health who subscribe to e-letters, purchase books and reports or visit websites.
This project is a test to find a permanent addition to our virtual team. The winner will receive a significant amount of design work from us.
We need a fast, responsive designer who gets back to us quickly. Be ready to make changes and corrections fast so that we can meet our deadlines.
If you're the winner of the cover competition and you want to work with us, Part Two of this job will be to lay out an html landing page (incorporating the cover you just designed). Part Three will be laying out a 45,000-word text in black and white.
The following web pages show our previous work. Don't be too influenced by what we've done in the past. We're open to a fresh approach.

People who are avid fans of alternative health and who are interested in natural treatments for cancer. They're mostly older readers, 50 and up. The readership is about equally divided between men and women. We mainly market to North Americans but we have some international readers.
This project is for a book cover.
The text is:
Beat Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer [main head]
WITHOUT Surgery, Chemo, or Radiation [part of main head but in smaller type]
by Lee Euler
with Susan Clark
[co-author credit to be somewhat smaller than main author]
A Guide to the Best Alternative Treatments [subhead]
[END OF TEXT]
In print, the cover will be 8 1/2 x 11 inches. It will also be sent as a pdf download that prints out at 8 1/2 x 11 when sized at 100 percent.
We've had success with pictures of people on the cover (e.g. stock photos of happy patients who beat cancer). But use your imagination. We're not married to that. If you do go with a picture of a patient/consumer, keep in mind that the typical cancer patient is middle-aged or older.
IMPORTANT: The main purpose of the cover is to look good in the html landing pages we'll use to promote the book. It will be reduced in size to a few inches and THE TITLE HAS TO BE READABLE and pack a punch when reduced. What looks good in an 8 1/2 X 11 may not look good when reduced to a few inches. Please keep that in mind: we want a cover that has a high-impact when it's only a couple of inches high.
We'll need the image in two formats: html and Adobe pdf, and in multiple sizes (for the html images). We want the pdf image in high resolution (for printing) and lower resolution (72 dpi) for downloads.
