How Nate.au started their print or packaging design journey

Company name

How to be a good employee! (or How to manage when your manager isn't managing)

Overview

I, like you, definitely do judge a book by its cover. So this book cover really needs to speak to the spirit of what I'm trying to say, to effectively reach positive employees who are looking for tools to help them make more of a difference. It needs to be modern, clear and catchy - to stand proudly and yet distinctly in the business books or personal development section of a bookstore.

I have managed several teams of young staff who didn't have much experience in effectively managing their workload and navigating a large organisation. My own journey is one from back room tech to senior strategic leader, so in some ways this is an autobiographical text on how to grow yourself from the edge of decision making to the core.

The book is fun, somewhat story based and very practical. I intend to use it as a workbook for new staff who need to learn these lessons, and I hope other managers might also see value in using it this way.

Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach

There are two key markets for this book:
i) Positive employees who would like to make more of a difference in their organisation, but feel disempowered, or mildly frustrated by bureaucracy, ineffective organisation and undermanaged (by managers who aren't taking the time to foster healthy teams that grow and improve). [ I say positive, because if you're so depressed and frustrated that you'd rather burn the building down then you probably won't buy into some of the altruistic messages of this book :-) ]

ii) Managers who would like to spend more time coaching junior staff, but don't have the time to spare. These managers can see this as a practical workbook they can use with their staff members to help them grow into effective employees who form part of a high performance workteam.

Requirements

I want a clear and catchy presentation. I prefer simple and clean over complex and arty. An accompanying image that relates to the book title would be good too.

Some covers I like (picking from amazon.com biz bestsellers):
Undercover Boss: Inside the TV Phenomenon ...
The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine
Lessons of a Brand Manager
Stumbling on Wins
Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard
Upgrade Your Life: The Lifehacker Guide ...
Carrots and Sticks Don't Work

Some covers I *don't* like:
Appetite for America
The 25 Best Time Management Tools & Techniques
How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life
How To Speak and Write Correctly

I realise many of the books I've noted that I like look similar (big text, clear and a simple accompanying pic) but you can try something different - it's more the clean and clear look I'm wanting than that style per se. Although I do like that style, I still want to stand out a little :-)
Any images used should have clear attribution (preferably creative commons/royalty free).

I am happy to take suggestions on the book title too; at this stage it's a little tongue-in-cheek and that works for me :-)
(BTW, 'How to manage when your manage isn't managing' is intended to be the subtitle, not an alternative title :-)

Attached is a brief book summary.
