Firewatch extends a service called Firebase (http://www.firebase.google.com), which is a platform that gives developers the ability to create serverless web and mobile applications. It provides services like storage, hosting, authentication and databases.

Firewatch simply hooks into (thus replacing) Firebase's database layer. It allows the users to be in more control of their data by providing more flexibility and a more detailed view.
