tomXW got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Design a fun website for kids and parents
Check out tomXW's Web page design contest…
Maths with Parents (MwP) is an online tool that supports maths education at home for schools in England. We help parents and children to love learning maths together. Primary school (ages 4-11) maths teaching has improved dramatically, but many children go home and are told by their parents: “I’ve always been rubbish at maths, so you will be too”. Maths homework is a miserable chore in too many households, supported by parents who were never taught the new methods that their child now learns. MwP work with primary schools to create a tailored package of support for the parents in each class. Every two weeks these parents are shown a video of the method that their child is currently learning. This is followed by two fun activities to play together. This support repeats throughout the academic year and teachers are provided with tools to monitor usage and to see feedback from the parents. There are three target audiences for our website: - Children aged 4-11 - Parents of those children - Schools that use/may purchase our product It is important to understand that parents are the group that are most difficult (and most important) for us to engage. As such our website design must appeal and be user-friendly for parents. Many parents have low levels of IT/Computer literacy. The website design must provide a simple and intuitive user experience. We already have a website and although it has considerable functionality the design is very basic. You can visit our website at https://www.mathswithparents.com. You can also login to the website and view the current design/user experience using the following details: User: firstname.lastname@example.org Password (case-sensitive): password We are seeking designs for three distinct pages: - Our homepage - The ‘class page’ where videos are displayed - The ‘activity’ page where activities related to each video lesson are displayed We will attach screenshots of each page to ensure you can identify each of the three pages. There is also a screen that is displayed immediately after a user logs in. This page includes a welcome message and asks the parent to select which child they are working with. Please note that we are NOT seeking a design for this webpage. We have attached our brand guidelines to the brief. These state the colour palette that should be used for designs. It also includes the primary and secondary forms of our logo. Please ensure that your designs are consistent with the colour palette and logos provided in the brand guidelines. The brand guidelines also specify which fonts to use but we are open minded about using other fonts so please feel free to include alternative fonts in your designs.

It is important to note that the navigation bar at the top of our website must be a feature of your design. Although we can change the menu items and the colour of the navigation bar, it is a feature of the framework we are using to build our website and cannot be removed.
Homepage: - When parents first come to the site there must be an obvious call to action to register as a new parent or to log in. - Many of our parents have low IT literacy, so the log in/register buttons need to be prominent. - The rest of the content should present information about MwP and what we do. At the moment this content is presented in tabs. However in the new design we would like this content to be presented in a series of sections - One section will include testimonial videos so you should allow for this in your design - Another section will outline how MwP works to support schools, including a sample video and activity - Another section will feature a call to action that allows schools interested in our product to book a demonstration (again, similar to www.unifrog.org near the bottom of their page) - Other sections will provide more information about our business – for example our partners, schools we work with, awards we have won etc. Class Screen: - This is the screen that parents will see after they login where they access our educational videos - This design of this screen should encourage parents to play the video and have “previous” and “next” navigation to other videos. - The design must also include buttons which link to activities that relate to the video - These button must be visually appealing so as to encourage parents/children to view the activities. We will attach some examples of our existing buttons to the brief. - Each activity should have a unique button. We would like your design to incorporate an easy way for us to create these buttons (e.g. through the use of free stock images or icon sets) Activity Page: - This page is where parents/children view the maths activities that relate to different videos - We have over 300 different activities so we are looking for a flexible template that can be used with a wide range of activities - An important feature of the activity page is the ability for parents and children to rate the activity and leave comments. This should be reflected in your design
What to avoid
As noted above we have attached our brand guidelines to this brief. Please ensure that the colours used in your designs are consistent with those guidelines.
It is important that your designs are (or could be) mobile-friendly. A large number of our users access the website via a mobile device and this must be taken into consideration. We will expect the winning designer to help us implement mobile/tablet/desktop versions of the designs
