matthewtmackenzie got their new web page design by running a design contest:
We've Got a Fun Mascot and We're Growing! All we're missing is YOUR professional website design.

We sell lesson plans and classroom resources to elementary school teachers. Our resources are for reading instruction and are for use with popular children's books like The Giving Tree, Amelia Bedelia, and Curious George. We have been operating on http://ReadingComprehensionLessons.com for about 2 years. On that site we only sell a membership which gives a member access to every lesson plan. When we move to BookPagez.com we will still sell the membership, but will also offer lesson plans for sale individually.
We currently operate at http://ReadingComprehensionLessons.com. We have attempted a redesign, but it is not coming together. You can view it at http://BookPagez.com/home
We have a mascot (a Bookworm, but sadly, no fun name for him yet:) ). We have him in multiple poses (seasonal, classroom settings, with books or tablet, etc). Please see the attached file for all poses. This mascot can be incorporated into the design. However please do not overuse the mascot. He should complement your design, not be the focus. We have attached a logo for BookPagez. The colors from the logo were used in the package covers (discussed below), but we are open to changing the color scheme. We have had package covers designed for all of our lesson plan packages. We have attached the pdfs for all of our packages so that you can get a feel for our product. Overall, we are going for simple and modern – not childish. Our market is teachers, not children and we want to appeal to a sophisticated, educated professional. We’re going for fresh, clean, and energetic. We don't want to look like all of the other lesson plan and resource websites that are out there (Scholastic, ReadingA-Z, TeachersPayTeachers, etc). We'd really like to visually stand apart from our competition.
Homepage Start by looking at http://BookPagez.com/home . We have laid out many of the elements that we would like to have on the homepage. The first major element is the “Select Your Grade Level and Favorite Book” section. Our visitors need to see familiar book titles right away, and we want to give them the option to dig deeper into what comes with each package by clicking through to the individual book pages. Next, based on the heat mapping on ReadingComprehensionLessons.com we would like to have a section / CTA to shop or learn about membership. (see Birchbox site for example) Next, there needs to be some information about our product. Each package contains multiple lesson plans, resources, and activities. We want to show visitors an example so that they can understand the product and be able to visualize using it in their classroom. Those are the main elements, then mix in spots for info about the product, CTA’s to Join or Shop, and trust elements (testimonials etc) as space allows. The header must include a prominent login button We’d like the footer to be similar to the footer on http://readingcomprehensionlessons.com ___________________________________________________________ Individual Book Page We have started a sample which can be viewed at http://bookpagez.com/the-giving-tree-lesson-plans-and-activities you can also look at the older version at http://readingcomprehensionlessons.com/lesson-plans/the-giving-tree/ At the top, we need to list the book title, author, grade level and guided reading level. We also need to list the components of the package and provide a preview. The preview is the most important part. We use a membership software that allows us to change a block of text depending on whether or not a visitor is a logged in member. A non-member visiting the site will see a block with the “Add to Cart” buttons, and a logged in member will see a block with the download links. Next, the page needs to include a content section where we will provide users with tips on how to use the resources along with images of the resources being used. Think alternating blocks with text and images, but with some design around them. We also get a lot of activity in the “Explore Resources for Books You Might Also Like” section on the bottom of this page: http://readingcomprehensionlessons.com/lesson-plans/the-giving-tree/, so we’d like to include something like this as well. Feel free to make changes with the design, our samples are just a rough guide. Please include the elements, but make the page part of your overall design. __________________________________________________________ Subscribe / Join Page You can view our current About Membership page here: http://readingcomprehensionlessons.com/about-membership/. We would like to morph this page with a subscription/join page. You can view our current page here: https://members.readingcomprehensionlessons.com/subscription/ In the end, we’d like a page that is similar to this page: http://www.surpriseride.com/order-now/. We like how information about the subscription is blended with supporting information about the product and trust elements. We want to display our refund policy and payment methods, but like the more playful, softer sell approach. Please note, that the new site will only offer one membership option (Annual at $34). Since we are only going to offer one membership level the sign up form can be integrated directly onto the page. Please give the form a style to match the overall page. Fields will include First Name, Last Name, Email, Username, Password, Payment Method (drop down selection). here is an example of our current form: https://members.readingcomprehensionlessons.com/register/annual-membership/ ___________________________________________________________ Member Homepage This is a unique page for our Members only. It is important that they have a unique experience when they log in. We want to present them with relevant member only information in a very clean, elegant manner - nothing chaotic - teacher’s days are super chaotic already. These are the elements that need to be included (not necessarily in this order): Welcome Message Featured Resources New Resources Featured Blog Posts Manage Your Account Block Search Tool A Request Resources block that includes a from (fields include: Name, Book Title, Specific Resources)
What to avoid
NO STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY (we like line art)
We are not professional designers. The designs on BookPagez.com and ReadingComprehensionLessons.com are representative of our abilities. We are very excited to have professional design, and hope that you can create something unique, that will help us stand out in our market. Please know that you don't have to preserve any of our design. We know it's not very good, and know that you can give us something that is better, if you don't have to work within our current design. So feel free to start from scratch and have fun!
