XMMedia got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Website Redesign for FLC Seniors Club

Community & Non-Profit
FLC Seniors Club is non-profit seniors group that organizes events for seniors to take part in, in and around Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Membership is open to anyone 55+ and their activities range from cycling and curling to bridge, theatre and dance classes. FLC Seniors currently has a membership of over 1400 and is looking to move more of their communications onto their website (vs a newsletter).
www.flcseniors.ca - as mentioned (see "what you want"), we really like what we already have, but just want to bring it up to date and give the club a fresh web presence. We don't have other websites that we like, but feel free to suggest some. We do want the menu to close to the top and obvious. We also want the activity listing to be included on every page.
The main design "feature" of the new website must be that it's easy to navigate. This the main feature of the current website that everyone loves. Visitors can clearly see the menu and it's obvious that it's a menu. This is especially true for seniors who may not have the vision a 25 year old has. The website will have the following sections: - home - activities - news & events - about - membership info - contact The home page needs to have a listing of activities (for direct access) and the briefs from the most recent news/event items. The listing of activities should be on every page. There should also be room for some basic club information. The activities page will have a listing of the activities with short, 1-2 sentence descriptions. The activities will have a variety of information within them, so the design needs to be flexible to allow for different page layouts. The design of the website should be consistent through all the pages to make it simple for visitors to navigate. The reason for the redesign is not so much because the existing site has problems, but it's existed for over 5 years and is becoming harder to maintain. Instead of using the existing design for a new website, we thought it best to come up with a new, although similar design for a new website and start from scratch. This will allow us to clean up the backend and leave room for new features to be added over time.
We would like to create the website using the 1140px grid (http://cssgrid.net/), so you can design for 1140px, but it needs to have the ability to shrink. Meaning the design should have room to compress to 960 (for 1024x768 monitor). We are not worried about going larger than 1140, but it'd be helpful if it could grow. Remember these are seniors! So, probably best to keep content/copy text to no smaller than ~12pt. But on the other hand, don't be too afraid of stretching the envelope a bit...these aren't seniors stuck in their ways :) I've attached 2 "logos". header_logo.jpg is from their current website. It's not a "logo" per se, but it's become recognizable for their website. If you want to make tweaks to it and use in your design that'd be alright, but I wouldn't spent any time "redesigning" it. pin_design.jpg is a pin that they give to their members for service to the club. We should incorporate it in to the website, but it doesn't need to play a major roll. One thought was to have header_logo on the left and pin_design on the right of the header, but there's nothing set in stone. (We will attempt to get a higher quality version of the pin.) Feel free to use stock images. We have an account with iStockphoto, which works best for us if you'd like us to purchase the images after.
